How do you pack for 12 months?

You learn from your first packing failures.

When I packed my bags in 2011 for 27 months, to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia my mother (the sweetest lady) loaded my luggage with items I never used. For example, a hammer. I never used a hammer during those 27 months, and when I needed a gadget to knock things into place, I used a rock. All of the essential items I needed to survive were present in the county. With that in mind I am packing light this time. I am only taking one checked luggage, a carry-on, and a small personal item. Although I am packing light, I am making room for my must-haves.

My Must-haves:

The items listed below were removed from their original packaging to create more space in my luggage and to lessen the amount of waste I will create in the county. It’s important to remember that some countries do not have a formal waste management system and you are responsible for discarding your trash, usually by burning it.

The itemDescription
Shampoo and conditioner barsBy using bars, you eliminate the use of plastic containers. If you prefer liquid shampoo and conditioner, reuse the containers.
Reusable feminine hygiene productsThere are many options available. Find what works best for you. For example, menstrual cups, menstrual underwear, or reusable pads. You can find disposable products at a local shop in the country, but I want to limit the amount of trash I create.
Shea butterThis product is inexpensive and easy to pack. If raw, it’s good for the hair, skin, and cooking. Here’s a cool article about Shea Butter production and exportation. You can find commercial beauty products at a local shop; shea butter is my preferred product.
Rain jacket and bootsThere is a long rainy season where I’m going.
e-readerThis is one of the best ways to travel with many books without weighing your luggage down.
One or more items that will remind me of home. For example, a favorite piece of clothing, photos, your favorite throw blanket, or favorite seasoning.
MiscellaneousBinoculars, jump rope, playing cards, or board games (all great items to connect with others and build relationships).
