It’s been about ten years since I returned home from traditional Peace Corps (PC) service. Since returning, I considered returning to volunteer again, but in retirement, after I accomplished my career goals and saved enough money for retirement. Volunteering now, in the middle of a career path I planned for myself seemed irrational. What opportunities would I miss? What path would I find myself on? These were the questions I contended with, but then I realized that this experience will be a part of my professional journey and will enrich my overall professional future. So, I decided to take advantage of a Peace Corps Response opportunity!

After sharing my decision with my parents, I soon learned that they had concerns. I was surprised because I thought they would feel more comfortable because of my previous experience in Ethiopia. They both expressed concern for my safety, which is understandable. But, my mom’s concerns seemed to be informed by a limited perspective on the diverse lifestyles of people living on the African continent. Her reaction helped me remember the importance of Peace Corps third goal. They have three goals.

  1. To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
  2. To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
  3. To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

But the third is one I wish to accomplish through this blog by sparking curiosity in people back home to learn about other people groups and cultures around the world.
