I was immediately overwhelmed with nostalgia as Peace Corps staff greeted me at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, in Zambia. Their hospitality and warmth reminded me of my initial encounters with Peace Corps staff in Addis Ababa, almost ten years ago.

I missed out on the views from the airport to our accommodations because we arrived in the evening. But in the morning, I was greeted by the sound of chirping birds and the crowing of a rooster. The morning air was humid, with a light mist and a cool breeze. I took a deep breath in, and exhaled, “this is Zambia”!

My cohort is small, with only four. It’s intimate and feels sisterly. I’m the only returned Peace Corps (PC) volunteer, but the other three are well-traveled and have seen more of the world than me. We’re currently in pre-service and will depart to our respective sites in the next week or so.
