June was a successful month. With my CSE champions (watch my video for context) we hosted workshops and launched two comprehensive sexual education (CSE) school debate clubs. My colleagues showed tremendous dedication by conducting workshops/training on the weekends and during the week after teaching at their respective schools. As of today, we have conducted seven convenings and trained over 100 educators since June 10th. The most rewarding workshop for me was the Guidance Teacher training. With my colleagues, we tailored the training and presentations with activities aimed to remind Guidance Teachers of their adolescent years and their need for guidance and counsel during those years. Our objective was to draw empathy and to remind our participants of an adolescent’s vulnerabilities like seeking identity, desiring to take risks, managing an influx of hormones, and other family and social stressors. The objective was achieved, and teachers reflected on their formative years and identified moments where they wished they had more guidance and support from adults in their lives.

Next steps: We hope to reconvene our Guidance Teachers for more practical and technical training to strengthen their counseling skills in the next quarter. Stay tuned!

  1. There is a need for these type of programs in the states.
