Despite the unending overcast of load shedding and water rationing, May was magical. Even though we graduated from living without electricity from eight hours to twelve hours a day, and the water supply wavered more than usual, my days were full of laughter and joy because of my newly formed friendships. I said yes more than ever to invitations and took more initiative to connect with friends. As a result, I was invited to more social events in May than during my entire 12-month term as a volunteer. Invites to BBQs, birthdays, game nights, dinner, a boat cruise, church, and the occasional meet-up with friends. The struggle of load shedding has become overshadowed by the open arms of my new friends and family in Zambia.

Mini VLOG: Living without electricity

Our furry companion is the cherry on top. She contributed to the magic this month. Our stray dog, Shelly has been a frequent visitor for about two months. But, in May, she introduced us to her puppy, and we grew attached immediately. Unfortunately, we lost the puppy unexpectedly. He fell ill and passed on. However, in our pursuit of medical care, we learned of an excellent non-profit animal welfare organization (ZAWS) that traveled to our home, transported the puppy to their facilities for an assessment, and followed up with the puppy’s status. We were so impressed with their services. In that week, I shared ZAWS with anyone who would listen. They do incredible work in the community and could use your support. Check out their website here (Zambezi Animal Welfare Services).

By month’s end, the magic bubbled over when I received an offer to work with an incredible organization in Tanzania. The interview process advanced so quickly that I barely had time to digest what was happening. I found the opportunity unintentionally while browsing job boards on a random afternoon. I hesitated to apply. I thought the pool of candidates would be too vast and that other qualified individuals with more international experience would have a better chance than me. So, when I received an invite for the first interview and then the second, I thought, “Oh my god, I may be moving to Tanzania.” Three weeks later, I’m writing this blog in New Jersey after traveling home two days ago to surprise my parents with an unannounced visit before I travel to Tanzania.
